The third quarter is in full swing! The students have taken the Winter Benchmark assessments and our teachers have met to discuss student achievement thus far. We have also analyzed our behavioral data.  So far we are on track at achieving our goal of 80% or more students receiving 0-1 infractions.  Currently we are at 83%.  Our students are doing a fabulous job!

Our Southeast Cultural Day was a huge success.  I am sure your children came home with many stories to tell!  Our website has many pictures of this memorable day.  Thank you to all the parents who helped make this day so special.

Evergreen Reads: This year’s Evergreen Reads book is The One and Only Ivan.  Students at Southeast School will be reading this book in class, however there are 25 copies of this book available to families of each school.  The first 25 families to come in and request the book will be given the book AND an “Evergreen Reads” yard sign.

Looking for Opportunities to Share Your Talents with D124 and Southeast School?

Long-Range Plan Focus Group: As a component of our current strategic plan, D124 is looking for 30 volunteers - parents, students, and staff members who represent our five District schools - to join Dr. Machak for a series of focus group conversations related to addressing various aspects of District Culture.

D124 Foundation Board Needs Parent Volunteers: From an expanded Back to School Bash with an emphasis on community involvement to sponsoring the fall visit of award-winning author Marty Kelly to last month’s Breakfast with Santa, the D124 Foundation has hit the ground running this year with a calendar full of fantastic events designed to enhance school life in D124 for our students and their families.  The decision-making body of the Foundation is the Executive Board, and we are currently looking for parent leaders interested in donating their time and talents to help us do even more for our kids.  The Foundation Board meets in the late afternoon/early evening once each month.  The role of our parents and community members on the Executive Board is to assist the Foundation in the planning and coordination of a variety of Foundation-sponsored events throughout the school year as well as to act as liaisons between the Foundation and our school community in your neighborhood and throughout the Village.  The only qualification for the job is a desire to enhance the opportunities and experiences available to all our students and teachers in District 124.  Interested?  Please contact the Foundation at

Southeast School PBIS Team:  I am looking for parent volunteers to work with the SE Universal PBIS team.  The purpose of the Universal Team is to review school wide behavioral data and to plan activities that promote and celebrate positive behavior.  Meetings are once a month after school.  Please email or call me if you are interested in serving on this committee.

Looking Ahead………..

PARCC Testing  March 8-19

Each year students in 3rd-8th grade are given the PARCC assessment.  This standardized assessment gives us results that we use to see how are students perform compared to students all across the United States who take the same test.  Student attendance is very important during this time.

5th Grade State Science Assessment  March 6 and 7

This state assessment is given to students in 5th and 7th grades.  It provides us results that give us an indication of the students’ mastery of the science standards.
